Did you know that the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) has 5 layers and that each layer has a special function to make our skin healthy and beautiful?
The Stratum Basale contains keratinocytes that divide and are responsible for epidermis growth and melanocytes that protect against UV rays.
The Stratum Spinosum is home to square shaped cells that rise upward and flatten out as natural cell turnover occurs. This layer also contains Langerhans Cells that aid in the skin’s immune function.
The Stratum Granulosum consists of melanin granules that are compressed into a thin layer. This is often the darkest layer of the epidermis. This layer acts as a protective shield to the Stratum Basale and Stratum Spinosum.
The Stratum Lucidum is a clear layer composed of transparent cells (keratin) in which light can pass. These cells are only present in the palms of the hands or soles of feet.
The Stratum Corneum is the top layer of the epidermis. Tightly packed dead skin cells are constantly being shed and replaced in this layer. This layer contains Natural Moisturizing Factor and is responsible for keeping the Stratum Corneum hydrated.
